If you've found an unwanted tree stump in your garden, you may be a bit stumped as to what to do with it and how to get rid of it (see what we did there?).
Jokes aside, at Taylor Total Weed Control, we're specialists in tree stump removal. Keep reading to find out how we tackle stubborn tree stumps and stop them in their tracks.
The Equipment: The Stump Grinder
Don't be fooled - this isn't the name of some fictitious monster. The stump grinder is actually an incredible piece of equipment that we use to carry out the 'stump grinding method' which we'll go on to talk about later.
A stump grinder consists of a large circular blade with its edges facing the ground. The edges of the blade rotate to destroy the contents of the unwanted stump by turning the wood into easy-to-manage wood chips. We prefer using the stump grinder to remove unwanted tree stumps as it can also reach beneath the stump to remove any stubborn roots.
What to do with stump grinding debris
Once we've reduced all of the wood from the stump into chips, you can either fill up the hole with them, use them in the rest of your garden as mulch, or put them into your compost.
What to do after a tree stump is ground
Obviously, stump removal can leave quite a large hole in your garden and it can be a bit of an eye-sore. Some stump grinders can even make holes up to 18 inches deep! Once the stump has been removed, you can either fill it with wood chips or stones to make a new seating/play area, or you could add topsoil and start developing a lawn over the hole.
The Method: Stump Grinding
There are many reasons why we use stump grinding as the method of tree stump removal. In short, it is an excellent way to remove the affected area without damaging the surrounding environment. It's quick, easy and incredibly effective.
We find that almost anyone can benefit from our stump removal services, but most frequently we work with local authorities, charitable trusts, sports clubs and housing associations to get areas of land ready for their intended purposes. Saying that, though, we also work with people who simply want to get rid of tree stumps in their home gardens!
Can tree roots grow back after stump grinding?
The good news is that tree roots cannot re-sprout after the stump grinding has been completed. Instead, the roots will start to deteriorate, leaving no sign or trace of any stump!
What are the benefits of stump grounding?
If you leave a tree stump to its own devices, it can begin to rot and decompose. This can lead to the development of dangerous fungi, such as honey fungus. Honey fungus thrives near dead wood which can pose a health and safety risk to pets, children, surrounding wildlife and plants.
The suckering of tree roots occurs when suckers emerge from the root system. When left to develop, they can grow into an entirely new plant.
As we've already said, once the stump has been grinded to a pulp, there will be no remnants to cause any further issues. Also, depending on the size of the stump, stump grinding can be complete in as little as 15 minutes.
