Recent research has uncovered some insightful stats regarding the Japanese knotweed hotspots in the UK, which could pose a worry to homeowners in Wales and the West. It has been revealed that the most serious Japanese knotweed hotspots reside along the west coast.
According to House Beautiful, Wales and Bristol are particularly problematic areas for Japanese Knotweed, making up two of the top three worst-affected regions in the UK. While Bolton tops the list, Bristol isn’t far behind with over 100,000 active cases of Japanese knotweed.
A further article by Wales Online noted that many places in Wales are hotspots for Japanese knotweed, with areas like Llanelli, Caerphilly and Swansea all clocking in at well over 300 cases of JKW infestation.
“A Major Problem Across the UK”
Japanese knotweed expert, Nic Seal, noted that “Japanese knotweed has become a major problem across the UK, with areas of industrial heritage such as North Wales particularly badly affected”.
The Welsh government website also notes that, whilst spread throughout Wales, Japanese knotweed hotspots most commonly appear on sites that are disturbed by human activity such as railway lines, rubbish tips, old allotments, derelict land.
This fact was reinforced by the recent story of Network Rail having a myriad of issues with Japanese knotweed infestations on their land nationwide.
