best way to get rid of japanese knotweed - how to get rid of japanese knotweed

If you've found Japanese knotweed on your property, it's important you get rid of it quickly and efficiently. Leaving knotweed for weeks or months can have a detrimental impact on your property, and even lead to disputes with neighbours!

Of course, there's more than one way to tackle Japanese knotweed, and some ways are better than others. In today's blog, we'll take a look at the best way to get rid of Japanese knotweed.

How to Get Rid of Japanese Knotweed

Knotweed Excavation and Removal

japanese knotweed excavation

One method of knotweed removal is to excavate the site and take the Japanese knotweed and infested soil to a specialist disposal site - this is known as knotweed excavation and removal. Although having the knotweed removed from the site seems like an appealing option, excavation does create some logistical challenges.

The excavation diggers need a clear access route to avoid contamination, and you need to be comfortable with the idea of part of your garden being dug up and removed. To make sure that the entire Japanese knotweed plant and entire root system is removed, the site needs to be excavated quite deeply which can affect your garden's appearance.

Excavation and removal treatments do have a high success rate in getting rid of Japanese knotweed, so it's definitely a removal method worth considering if your property has the appropriate access. Is this the best way to get rid of Japanese knotweed? For some people, yes. However, there is one more way that might just steal the top spot...

Knotweed Herbicide Application

By far the most popular knotweed removal treatment method is herbicide application. Not only is this one of the more affordable method, but it's also more likely to completely rid your property of Japanese knotweed for good. Here's how our knotweed herbicide treatment works:

  1. Ensure that there are no bodies of water nearby that could be contaminated with the herbicide.
  2. The Japanese knotweed plant is sprayed with specialist herbicides (which cannot be bought commercially).
  3. Finally, after a few applications, the plant will die and it can be safely removed from the site if desired.

Knotweed Excavation and Burial

A third and final knotweed treatment is knotweed excavation and burial. As the name suggests, following knotweed excavation, any knotweed waste is buried on site in a weed proof membrane. This weed proof membrane controls and limits any potential future regrowth. Although knotweed excavation and burial is less time consuming, invasive, and expensive than excavation and removal, knotweed burial is still not as cost-effective or as efficient as knotweed herbicide treatment.
