Moss can be found on lawns and patios all year round. If you leave it alone, it will only get worse, so moss control is essential. But when is the best time to treat moss?
When to Treat Lawn Moss
Tackling the moss on your lawn is a task you can perform almost any time in spring, autumn, or winter. But each season requires different treatments.
Autumn is probably the best time to treat lawn moss. Taking action in September or October will minimise moss growth during the winter months, which also makes it less of an issue in spring. Plus, moss tends to die back in the drier summer heat, so it might be as simple as raking it all up in September.
To remove moss from your lawn in the autumn, it’s best to start with an application of moss killer before raking and scarifying. But make sure this is done before any autumnal rains set in – dryer conditions make it easier to rake and scarify your lawn.
Once this is done, you might be tempted to leave your lawn alone over winter. Take our advice: don’t. Winter lawn moss treatment is well worth doing. Moss can grow rapidly as the weather gets cooler and wetter over October and November. Before this sets in, apply lawn fertiliser to ensure your grass stays healthy enough to out-compete any moss.
It might also be worth trimming the top of the grass on a dry day between December and February. Once this is done, another dose of lawn fertiliser will help – especially if it is rich in iron. This will help blacken the moss in time for raking up in spring.
Springtime is great for killing moss: apply a moss killer during fine weather, feed and overseed the lawn, and this should stop your moss problem at its roots. You can then undertake a full spring lawn care treatment to promote a healthy lawn.

When to Treat Moss on Your Driveway, Patio, and Roof
Moss also affects patios, driveways and roofs, and is just as dangerous in these places as it is on a lawn. Moss can cause patio and roof tiles to lift, crack, and ultimately shatter, and is a slip hazard on driveways and pathways. Fortunately, with a little effort, moss can be treated in these places.
The best time to treat moss in these locations is the summer, when the weather is drier and hotter. On a dry but cloudy day, you can mix up some home remedies and get to work.
