Why is Japanese knotweed such a big problem in the UK?
Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) is native to Japan. It was brought to Europe in the Victorian era, and 19th-century botanists loved it; Utrecht’s Society of Agriculture & Horticulture even went so far as to award the plant a gold medal.
(Note that there are several other plants that look like Japanese knotweed – if you’re uncertain, our knotweed experts will be able to confirm the plant’s identity for you.)
Nowadays, Japanese knotweed is considered a scourge. Present in many parts of the UK – including Gloucestershire – knotweed grows very quickly and can even find its way through cracks in concrete and brickwork.
You need to take action ASAP if you find Japanese knotweed on your land. Allowing the plant to grow unchecked will reduce the value of your property and may result in structural problems, clogged pipes and/or disrupted cables depending on where the knotweed is growing.
So it’s important to act quickly. However, you should NOT attempt to destroy the Japanese knotweed yourself – a small fragment of rhizome root can grow into a whole new plant if it finds its way back into the soil, and if you accidentally spread Japanese knotweed into the wild, you may be fined or even imprisoned.
